Control: Library
Control 2 of the Winter Cycling Challenge was the Milwood Branch of the Austin Public Library. Return one book and pick up another from the reserved stack. Another 8.5 miles of utility cycling.
Discovery: ”The Hideout Pub“. I must have ridden by this spot a few hundred times and never noticed it. Their web site claims that they serve tasty burgers. I’m definitely going to stop by there some time. Although I didn’t notice any bike parking.
Observation: When did we become afraid of our own shadows? There is a sign at the entrance to the library that reads “no hats, no sunglasses, no hoods.” You would think this was a bank or credit union branch. This combined with all the security cameras makes we wonder why we are so obsessed with security and safety.

The sign at the library entrance? That makes me crazy. I wear prescription sunglasses, so I’d prefer to run in, grab my book (mine are usually on reserve), and run back out without having to change to my indoor glasses. But if I just take off my sunglasses, I run into things. And if I don’t take them off at all, the librarians get these looks on their faces like they’re only just warding off a stroke because I’m Breaking the Rules. I’m sure they had an incident that prompted this policy, but that doesn’t make me any less crazy.
yeah, I got a stern look when I forgot to take off my cycle cap — which doesn’t have a bill big enough to block the cameras from seeing my face…librarians, no sense of humor
